Childhood obesity is a serious health problem in the U.S., with nearly 1 in 5 children and adolescents being affected, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Especially troubling is that the extra weight acquired during childhood often places children on a path to health issues that were once thought of as adult problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, per the Mayo Clinic. And that doesn’t include psychological issues such as low self-esteem and depression that can be prompted by carrying excess weight.

Obesity and the factors that cause it in early childhood are complex and can include genetics, behavior and medication. As part of its commitment to helping the parents of the Rio Grande Valley stay on top of their children’s health, South Texas Health System Children’s will dedicate its next “Let’s Talk Children’s Health” webinar to childhood obesity. This free online seminar will highlight ways parents can manage their child’s weight.
